You have what is also called the Eagle Vista wagon in USA/Canada. I had an
89 for 7 years. The cut out is likely fuel presure loss. Check the
following:

a) the MPI relay, which is the large can behind the center console. This
relay controls the fuel pump.

b) check the ECU for leaking capacitors. The ECU is under the LH front seat.
If there's a fishy smell or obvious electrolyte leak, any electronics tech
could replace them.

c) there's an access plate to the fuel pump / sender under the LH rear floor
(4WD) or under the rear seats (FWD). The wires to the pump can corrode, some
times even come off.

But first, replace the fuel filter.

Or at least take it off (without screwing the lines), give it a whack upside
down and blow some air through it in the reverse direction.

Sounds like the distributor needs replacing . It contains a coil and the
electronics.

As soon as it cuts out ,Open the hood and see if you have a spark.
If a white spark or no spark,Then its distributor replacement time.

No jonny, the 4G63 SOHC 8v Spacewagon / Chariot / Vista distributor does not
have a coil in it. That was only introduced in the 93+ models with the 4G64
SOHC 16v engine. The 90 has a coil and power transistor assembly bolted to
the cam belt end of the intake manifold. The distributor is an old style
breakerless type.

Sorry Stewart.My mistake.
This last month i have seen 3 breakdowns due to distributor failure on space
wagons with high milage.
And thinking back all were 1993-1995 models.
Out of interest 2 failed completely ,while the third car only cut out when
hot.

I've just had this with a 1994 (116855 on the clock) Space Wagon - If you're
getting any strange smells...eggy farts....then the c.converter (too pissed
to spell catathingy) might be on the way out and can start giving you heaps
of probs, but it sounds suspiciously like the distributor....£50 recon on
ebay.
