96 Radio in 97 Galant

Last spring, the radio in my 1997 Galant was replaced with one from a
salvage yard(from a 1996 car, if I recall correctly).  Standard
AM/FM/cassette player, no CD.  It seems that the replacement turns itself
off when the car is turned off, and  has one or two pre-set stations that it
holds, but I cannot get it to hold a channel I want.  While this is not a
really big deal, I'm wondering if someone has any suggestion or if there is
some trick to make this particular radio more accommodating, other than
buying a new one from the dealer(not likely to happen).

TIA for any advice.

Sounds like the power wiring is slightly different. There's main power (from
the on-off switch) but also a battery backup +12v that always on and take a
few mA to keep the radio presets active.

Stewart, if you happen to see this, thanks for the response.  I have been
checking back to see if anyone had an answer, and it is only now that I see
your reply, after unsub-ing and resub'ing.

I wasn't the one who plugged the radio in, so I have another question:
could the connection have been put together in the wrong direction, or is it
only a one way type of thing?  I'd rather know if it's worth checking out,
before someone tries to rip the dashboard apart again.  Seems to me that if
the battery backup (I assume you mean a connection to the car's main
battery) portion of the wiring wasn't a match, that the old pre-set stations
would vanish, too.  Ah, well, it's not a major thing really.  Thanks again.
