I have a 97 gsx, manual transmission. i was driving it last night and
lost second fourth and reverse gears. looked under the hood and
noticed the shift linkage cable was exposed. after lookin i noticed
the rubber sleeve had snaped. there is a lil round metal ring that was
holding some of the rubber still on the linkage sleeve. do i need a
whole new linkage or what can i do??

On the end of the shift cable there's a quarter sized ring with a rubber
washer in it. This fits over the shift lever into the transmission. These
rubber washers sometime give up. Mitsu (last time I checked) want to replace
the whole cable assy which is a real PITA.
The rubber washer can be replaced with nylon, urethane or brass bush. Worst
case you can make one using (3M?) urethane windscreen adhesive. Be creative
or find someone who is.
