Hiya all,
Friend of mine has a 2.8 turbo intercooled diesel Shogun. It has a
performance problem.
Left in auto, it changes gear about 2500rpm and is a real slug, does not
kick down under hard (?) acceleration.
Using the 'box manually provides a bit more speed but not much. The car has
all on keeping up with normal traffic.
We can hear the turbo spinning up and there are no obvious air leaks. The
thing does kick out a bit of black smoke when on full throttle.
The car starts first time, hot or cold and doesn't make any odd noises.
Anybody got any pointers as to what to check first??
Thanks in advance for any help here.

What do you expect from a Mitsushitty? I sounds like it is running real
good if you ask me.

EGR is stuck in open position?
Just block it, saves fuel and gives more power at low rpm's.
Turbo waistgate not closing or opening to soon?
Intercooler blocked or dirty?

Your description does not make clear if it starts correctly in 1st gear ...
perhaps you have a transmission problem and it is stuck/starting in 2nd
gear? This might explain the lack of power on acceleration and failure to
downshift too.
