Price to replace a blown head gasket?

1997 Eclipse GST.  Blew the head gasket.  Radiator overflow filled with oil
as is the hose to the radiator.  Anyone know about what it would cost to
have this replaced?  Thanks.

Step #1: sit down ...

Step#2: check your credit card limit...

Be aware that fixing a turbo engine requires significantly more rigorous
work and potentially quite a bit more money than a N/A engine with a similar
problem.

Your engine is 11 years old, with about 130K+ miles on it.

It really depends on what caused the blow up, how long the oil was mixed
with water, and what else is damaged or simply worn.  Since yours is a 7
bolt engine, it needs to be checked for crank walk.

You can fix the head with the engine in place, but see below.

Fully reconditioning the head (certainly the exhaust guides will be worn,
the head may be warped if it got too hot, meaning you replace it) is about
$700 reassembled ready to install.

Add about $150 for a gasket kit, another $200-250 for new belts, water pump
and maybe tensioner bearing(s).  Add $120 for a set of the use-once head
studs. Add another $200 for incidentals. Add 6 hours labour.

Your turbo also needs to be checked for impeller shaft wear. If its worn,
then it's way cheaper get a new one (I got a TD05-16G for $300 including
shipping to Canada from IloveTacoTaco in CA, see ebay) than getting a $600
rebuild. Likewise the sump should come off and pull the rods and pistons to
check for out of round big ends, and evaluate the bearings and crank. Which
means at least you put in a new set of rings.

The oil pump should be checked for wear, though its probably OK.

You could easily spend $1600 to get the engine running again, then find that
you should have rebuilt the whole thing, a job that costs between $2000 and
$3000 depending on what has to be done (boring to oversize pistons costs but
if it has to be done, it has to be done).

You should consider putting in a new clutch when the engine is out.

The same applies to the getting used JDM engines: these require suitable
checks and replacement parts before installation.

The bottom line here is, for an 11 year old GST, its cheaper to rebuild the
engine properly once than have a half-assed job done twice.

Look around your area for a shop with specific Eclipse turbo rebuild
experience.
