Recently as I was unscrewing the plug on the side of the transmission
on my son's 94 3GT 5 speed, pressurized air escaped which makes me
think there is a vent hole that is plugged. Where and how is the
transmission vented?

There's usually a little vent valve on the top of the tranmission.
