I recently purchased a Draw Tite Class III receiver hitch for my 2002
Montero Limited. It was a specific model for the vehicle and bolted on to
existing holes in the frame. However, it lowered the rear clearance by about
3". There is easily enough clearance to raise it another 3" and place the
receiver tube just under the bumper fascia without any modifications to the
bumper. However, calls to Draw Tite's technical department have resulted in
nothing more than "Sorry!" and a warning that if I modify the hitch that
there will be liability issues.

Is there anyone that has purchased a decent hitch??? I'm willing to toss
this one away or sell it but it's all but useless for even mild off road use
and will scrape hard the first time I go into a steep wash or drive over a
rock outcropping.

i've got a hitch that i bought from uhaul.  installing it required removing
the plastic panel beneath the rear bumper.  once installed, the receiver
nestles right up against the chrome center portion of the bumper.

follow the 'rear install' link here and check out the last picture...
