Good question. The MAF should never need "cleaning".

I looked there first, my repair manual said to look there too. I took
the air box completely off and found no wires, just black plastic! Is
it possibly buried in the fender before the air box? Do I need to take
out the drivers-side tire and pull the wheel well? It's the only place I
have yet to look... I have two manuals, one says it's "IN" the air box,
which it is not..., the other says it's past the throttle body! Common
sense seems to tell me that the MAF should be located somewhere between
the air-filter (not before) and the intake manifold! I have pulled all
of that apart! Do I not have one? Could it be before the air filter?
I just looked my air box over again... On the intake manifold side of
the air filter box, I noticed a black rubber plug just below the intake
hose. It looks like the MAF wires could have come out of it. Is it
possible that the MAF was removed by a previous owner, or do I have a
freak MAF-less car?

You have a 420A engine. That is the same, with minor differences, as the
Neon. Your MAF is in the air intake line, after the air box. The other
sensor it is talking about is the MAP sensor. That is after the throttle
body and on the intake manifold.

It is on your intake manifold on the complete opposite side of the
throttle body. 420a motors have no sensors on the intake
