I'm new here so if this has been covered I apologize. Is there any reason
why my radio reception in my '04 Altima sucks?  It has the in window
antenna.  I have a Kenwood eXcelon head unit but the reception sucked just
as bad if not worse with the stock radio.  I was just wondering if this is a
commom problem.  I had a '96 200 SX-SER with the same receiver in it and it
was fine.  Thanks in advance.

I'd be willing to be the reception with the OEM unit was just great until
you decided to mess with it.

I'd be willing to be that the radio installer you used did not know what he
was doing when he installed your new unit.

So needless to say you have just voided your warranty on any and all
components that are now hooked up to the "new and improved" radio you
installed, so I guess you are pretty much fuc*ed.

I'll give you a hint, it is 2 words

signal amplifier

I'll bet it is not turning on

No, the reception was lousy with the factory radio as I stated before.  It
was also lousy with the '04 Altima I test drove prior to getting mine.

I was the one that installed the new unit and I did know what I was doing.

I was just wondering if anyone else had a similar problem and if so, what
they did to correct it.
Thanks.

Just stumbled on this newsgroup.

Radio reception in my new '05 is lousy too.  I will ask them about it at my
first oil change.  Very annoying to not get local radio stations well.

Unrelated to radio, I hear and feel a relatively high pitched buzzing or
whine when I accelerate in this vehicle.  Not sure where it is coming
from...but sounds like engine compartment.  Thoughts, anyone?

Hey, Hank.  I asked the sales manager about this and he says that this is
the first he has heard about it.  I don't think he would B.S. me about it,
seeing how he is a good friend.  I'm glad I'm not the only one with this
issue.  And yes, it's very annoying not to get local FM or AM stations.
Sorry to hear about your other issue.  Good luck.

So why did you buy one?

Because the car had too many positive features including a very good price
to let the radio reception sway my decision.  Plus, I knew I was putting in
my Kenwood receiver and I thought that would correct the problem.  It
obviously didn't.

The receiver has nothing to do with reception, I would suggest you try an
aftermarket signal booster, or maybe a sirius or something.

I was looking into Sirius.  Thanks for the reply.

I was checking with you about your reception. It appears that there are a
couple JA on the system. I also had very bad reception with an aftermarket
Unit. I did get Sirius and love it, but the problem is the window antenna.
The only way I see around this problem is to install an aftermarket
antenna. Let us know how it works out.

I spoke with a guy that works at a radio/tv repair shop and he mentioned to
get a diversity antenna.  Basically it will add another antenna input so I
can hook up a wired antenna and run it somewhere inside the car.
Crutchfield sells something like this.  I also spoke with a car radio sales
man at Best Buy (I know, he may not be the most reputable person to ask even
though he seemed pretty knowledgeable) and he told me to check to see if I
was connecting the power antenna wire.  I don't recall doing this and I
haven't had an opportunity to check yet.  He mentioned that he had come
across something like this before and connecting that wire fixed the
problem.  My receiver is currently at a repair shop getting a new laser
installed.

I have also thought about SIRIUS but the wife isn't to pleased with that
option.  Thanks for the reply, by the way.  I'll keep you posted when I find
out.

Has to be a bad design. I can barely pick up locals. Mine is in the shop for
other stuff now, and I've driven a couple of other vehicles as rentals
(Escape, Grand Prix), and I can pick up stations 300 km away no
problem...whereas my Altima can't catch half the in town signals.

For what is is worth, I had a similar problem on my 2000 Altima when I
first got it.
The signal to noise ratio was just really bad. If I turned on the rear
defrost, I could only receive local stations; the hash was just
rediculous.

There was at that time a problem with the way they embedded the
defrost and antenna - it was a manufacturing defect in some windows.
The dealer knew about it and replaced my rear window and it went away.

You could put a preamp in, but they tend to introduce more noise and
InterModulation -- they are usually not worth it if your antenna is
just bad.

Regards,
Remco
