I was rear ended at a red light. After which the car would not run. When
towing it home I put it in 5th gear and after about a mile it caught up
and ran as if nothing was ever wrong. A few days later I let the car lug
down in a parking lot and crow hoped (jerked)about three times and died.
Again it would not run. Another tow with the same results. It cranked
after the long tow. I am afrid to drive it. Any suggestions on what is
causing it to quit?

Most likely somthing to do with the fuel tank.  A quick visual
check under the rear of the car may reval the problem.
Just a quick off the top of my head check list would include:
- pinched fuel lines.
- dammaged fuel pump.(if the pump is located at the tank)
- dammaged wire harnes to the fuel pump. (dito above)
- a dammaged fuel tank is causing the fuel pickup to
bottom out on tank floor.
