I am trying to figure out what is wrong with my daughter's 93 Nissan Altima
GXE. When driving, the speedometer jumps to 40 MPH and stays there and the
transmission shifts "funny". It tachs up pretty high before shifting. Even
putting in reverse and backing up causes the spedo to register around 40. I
have replaced the speed sensor with no luck and just replaced the instrument
cluster to no avail. Any ideas as to what the problem might be? Any help
would be appreciated.

I just wanted to say that I have read your post and have no idea other
than the troubleshooting procedure of replacing a suspected failing
item with a known working item seems to work when all else fails.
The only reason I replied is because I do not see very much activity
on this newsgroup at all. You will probably fix this problem way
before anyone replies to this (if they do.)
Good luck!!

Must have been a bad Instrument Cluster. I just replaced with another one
and it works. Thanks anyway!
