Hi,
I've got a 2001 nissan altima GXE. One of the rear speakers blew and I
want to replace it. The first thing I noticed was how hard it is to
actually get to the speakers. I followed some advice I found and
folded down the rear seats, removed the plastic panels, removed the
brake light, removed all the fishhooks that hold down the fibreboard.
Everything seemed loose, but I still couldn't get the fireboard out
easily (without forcing it out and feeling like its going to rip). It
seemed to be blocked by the rear side cushions( not the seats
themselves, the seat part closest to the door). So I cancelled my
little project before doing anything stupid :)
1. Anyone have any advice on how else to access the speakers?
2. Is it normal or even smart to simply cut a hole though the
fibreboard to access the speakers? I was thinking of making it a bit
wider than the speakers themselves to acccess the screws and
everything?
3. Just to confirm, the speakers themselves are 6 3/4 in? but 6 1/2
in should be fine?
Thanks,
Y

You should try going to www.1stnissanparts.com. You can get the OEM
speaker for 20% above cost!!

Not to shill for a corporation, but Crutchfield will supply you with all of
the instructions necessary to replace factory stereo equipment (including
speakers) when you make a purchase from them. Though I am not positive, the
speakers are probably 6 1/4", but they are 5 1/4" in earlier models, so I am
not sure about that. In the '93-'97 models, the entire seatback has to be
removed in order to remove the fibreboard, so you may need to do that in
yours as well. Unfortunately, there is pre-cut sheetmetal underneath that
fibreboard, so cutting it may or may not allow speaker access. Though you
could just remove it altogether and replace it with something like Dynamat
under the "carpet" if you wish. Good luck either way. I'd skip the factory
speakers however, since you may as well get a better set once you've gone
through all of the trouble involved, and even a cheapo pair of Radio Shack
two-ways will sound much better (even with the stock head unit).

Oh, duh... should've looked before answering. Technically, the 6 1/2" should
work fine, but you may need some type of spacer. And wait until you need to
replace the front pair...
