Can anyone tell me if a 1996 Nissan Altima uses the newer r134 freon,
or the older r12?

Yes it  is a R134 freon unit.  Most auto part stores carry kits that will allow you to add freon yourself. The kits have all the instructions you need. It is simple once you read the directions or pay $75 to get it done. The kits are less than $25
