Hello - I just purchased a 2005 altima 2.5 SL in NY from a dealer where
it passed inspection. Brought it back to jersey and it fails
inspection due to gas cap. No engine light - nothing. I call Nissan
and they tell me that it is not a warranty item because the engine
light is not on.
Has anyone else had this problem? My husband is telling me to go back
to inspection and go to another line/machine. My mechanic tells me
jersey inspection stations will fail cars just to have their quota.
What to do?

I'd go to your local (NJ) Nissan dealer and have their service check your
gas cap. I would expect this at no charge also. It's always possible NY
dealer substituted gas cap. I'd also follow husband and go to inspection
station to see what is wrong with it. Last alternative is to buy a Nissan
approved gas cap and put on credit card. Get car reinspected and if rejected
for gas cap - go back to local Nissan dealer who sold you gas cap. I am
aware that NJ will reject if "check engine light is on".
In short if it gets rejected for an approved Nissan gas cap then the selling
dealer should/must get involved.
