my brother got a replacement remote for his maxima. Unfortunately the
new remote doesn't work and he's not sure if its the car's receiver
module or the remote that doesnt work. He attempted the programming
procedure and he got to the point where his hazard lights flashed from
inserting and removing the key, when he then switches the car to ACC
position and presses the "lock button" nothing happens. The remote is
the right model for the year of his car '97. currently he doesnt have
any remotes with the car so he's unsure about whether the RECEIVER
module for his car is even working.  He's certain he has a factory alarm
because he can open the car doors with the key which in turn arms and
disarms the alarm.
does anyone know where the receiver module is located for the keyless
entry system or how to verify that its working. perhaps the previous
owner removed it?

You're in a position where you have 2 unknowns, the receiver in the car
may be bad, or the remote itself. Go for the eaiser one to diagnose,
try another remote.

Yeah, im thinkin of trying an oem remote, the only thing that keeps me
guessing is the reason i was never given a remote entry remote from the
dealer in the first place.

That happens to alot of us, me included. I bought a remote off of ebay
for my 98 and was happy ever since. I'm sorry you've been burned on
ebay, I have as well, so I trade more cautiously. When I got my remote,
it was described as good as new. When it arrived it was anything but,
but it worked, so i just kept it and used it. This was a minor bad
experiece compared to 2 others I've had.

Check the battery in the remote. It is a silver oxide (like in a quartz
watch) battery.

I had the same problem too.  Be sure you get the remotes (2) and the two
keys (2) and the (1) valet key when you pick up the car when you buy it.
If the dealer will not offer up the keys and remotes the deal is off
and walk.  They took advantage of me on the Maxima and when I bought the
350Z I refused to take the car until they offered them up.  It seems
they like an extra set for themselves for the repo man...
