Cruise Control issues - 2001 Nissan Maxima SE

I've got a 2001 SE with about 47,000 miles on it.  I'm having issues with
the cruise control.  When I set the speed, I experience several different
problems

1.  The car will simply slow down and the SET light will turn off.
or
2.  For a second the car will hold the speed, accelerate a little and then
slow down and the SET light will turn off again.
or
3.  The car will slow, downshift and accelerate slowly and then the "SET"
like will turn off.

I  visually checked the cruise control servo under the hood..nothing obvious
there.  I then turned to the PCM to see if it would output any trouble codes
(maybe the speed sensor is bad) however I could not find the mode selector
on the PCM.  On previous years, you'd take off the plastic cover next to the
gas pedal to find the mode selector, however its not there.

Any idea if this type of test is still available on the 01 Maxima's?  I also
checked to see if I could find a DLC that might allow me to interface a
scanner tool but I couldn't locate that either.

Thanks for your help!

You need an OBD-II scan tool starting with the 2K model. The
connector is under dash below and, I believe, to the left of
the steering wheel.  BTW, unless you live in California, any Autozone
can/will pull any codes for you for free. But unless the CEL is on,
there's no code to pull and I don't believe there are any codes for
the cruise control system anyway.  Look for a loose/disconnected/pinched
vacuum hose.

Not all trouble codes trigger the CEL.

Patrick,

If it isn't a vacuum leak, maybe it's a problem with the ASCD pump or actuator.  They have
diagnostic procedures in the  factory service manual that might pinpoint it for you.

Nice, I had forgot about the automatic speed control device in the
dash.  I'll give that a look see.  I think I have some doc's on doing
some basic on-board diagnostics of the ASCD.

Thanks,

Patrick
