I was dirving down the road and my transmission quit pulling completley,
just like somebody put it in neutral.  Prior to this there was no slippage
and the fluid is red and not burnt.  My first thought after checking the
fluid was that an axle might have popped out which I checked, I then
pulled the cover and checked the converter bolts which are fine.  With the
car jacked up there is no change when shifting from park to drive or
reverse.  I know I should just go buy a new transmission but I have never
seen one fail in this way.  Anybody have any suggestions?

Here's what happenned to my 93 Maxima about a month ago (taken from

Follow up on my own post.

Car has been repaired.

Phoned arround several transmission shops in my area, DC metro. Most
quoted a price $1400 - $2650 depending on the required repair. Found a
local shop who listened to my description of the failure:

Transmission operates faultlessly for years. No symptoms of impending
failure. Out driving one day and pulling away from a Stop sign under
strong aceleration the drive quits completely with only a slight
thump. Car coasts to a halt. Motor revs but no drive in any gear.

Shop owner tells me this is most likely a torque converter failure.
Maxima torque converters regularly strip the female splines in the tc
where the input shaft enters.

Anyway his diagnosis over the phone proves correct.

Cost:
Torque converter $235.00
Labour    $500.00

Car runs faultlessly again. Hope this may help someone else in the
future.

I had a Camry with the same problem and it was the torque converter.
Seems that the welds inside break and if you stop in time it could be
replaced without rebuilding the transmission.  However, if you have
driven it or raced the motor it will throw metal parts through the
transmission and you will need a complete overhaul.
