I have a 98 Maxima GXE. I have a noise when I turn the wheel, when turning
at slow speed. I traced the noise, I think, to the steering box. After
pulling the boot off the drivers side of the box, it appears that the
shaft is moving quite a bit sideways(laterally) when I turn the wheel (not
only end to end as it should). There is not a lot of grease on the shaft so
it doesn't seem that here is a break in a seal, etc..  Older American cars
had "play adjustments" in their steering boxes. Does anyone know if there
may be a play adjustment on the Nissan that might solve my problem.

Check the lower steering shaft u-joint, I've seen a bunch of them on
different nissans give problems. The only real way to check it is disconect
it from the rack and feel if it's stiff. Don't try to adjust the rack, that
isn't the problem.
