Hi all

My SES light went on about 10 days ago, after which I notice that the car
was running rough, somoething particularly noticeable at 1500-2100 RPMs.

Took into a local Nissan dealer, who did the diagnostic and came up with a
bad coils verdict. All cylinders were misfiring.

Since I only have 26, 400 miles on the car, I thought I'd try getting some
coverage under the emissions warranty from Nissan. I was told by the
customers service rep that the coils were covered up to 36,000 miles under
this warranty --- but in the end it was up to the discretion of womeone or
another. That's another story.

What is weird is that I just filled up my gas tank and the rough ride
symptoms appear to have disappeared, even though the SES remains on.

Any ideas on what might be happening here??

Thanks

Harold,

I had the same thing happen to my 2k Max.  The dealer should replace all
of your coils for you under warranty (at least mine did).  This is a
well-known and documented problem with this era Max.  If your dealer is
reasonably repuatble, they should do this.  After all, these are paid for
by Nissan.  The dealer just passes the charges on up the line.

You can find a lot of information on this if you Google the newsgroup, as
well as at www.maxima.org.

Good luck,
Len

I think my dealer is reputable....but.... I was charged for the repair. This
is after I opened a case with Nissan customer service (national). They
maintain that the 3-year/36,000 mile (whichever comes first) rule applied.

I'd be interested in the details --- your dealer, miles you had on and how
long after purchase --- of your case so that I can raise the issue again
with Nissan and perhaps my dealer. Were you over 3 years with your car?

Thanks for the info

Harold

The 3/36K rule does apply... read your warranty coverage section of
your owners' manual. I did for my 2k1.  Coils are covered only under
2/36, not the powertrain 6/60.  Even if there is a tech bulletin on
the problem, there (apparently) is no recall or campaign.

I'd bet many dealers will replace coils though.  And/or go to bat for
customers in dealing with Nissan to get coverage for out-of warranty
items.  But this will be on a case-by-case basis and far more likely
for for good, loyal, customers.

The local dealer replaced all mine on my '99 Maxima at about 50K.  The service
writer said he'd see what he could do when I complained and he called me and said
they would pick up the entire cost.

It pays to be a bit forceful but not obnoxious about it I think.

Harold,

I was under the 3/36 line.  I don't know exactly what the mileage was, but
I think it was around 20k. It would have been about 18 months after
purchase (from that dealer - not that it should matter).

I had one go bad, and that was replaced under warranty.  Then, it happened
again, and the service manager said that he was just going to do the rest
at once.  There was never a question of whether they were going to pay for
it.

The dealer was Bergstrom Nissan in Oshkosh, WI.

It sounds like you are outside of the 3/36.  My guess is that you are then
out of luck.

Hope this helps,
Len
