Have a 1998 Maxima gxe. Use to release the pressure after opening the gas
tank to fill up. (made noise like the air came out). Lately it hasn't been
doing it?
Is that a problem?
Thanks
If you smell gasoline vapors during warm weather, your gas cap gasket is
bad. Replace the gas cap. You will not pass the safety & emissions
inspection in your state w/ a bad gas cap, plus you'll be polluting the air!

COuld be. Normally I hear the whoosh sound when opening an empty tank
that was last opened when completely filling it up. If I refill with
less of a change in the tank, i.e I used a quarter of a tank, I won't
hear the whoosh sound.

If it don't "whoosh", you need to replace the gas cap. It's required by
State inspection law. Plus, you'll be smelling gas vapors when it's warm
weather. I've replaced the caps on both my Max's due to inspection
requirements.
