Hi,
I've just got a new Maxima 05 and discovered what seems to be a
problem. When I test drove the car at the dealer everything seems fine,
but once in the city, I've noticed that when one of the front wheels
hits a pothole, while the other one stays on flat surface, something
seems to rattle inside the steering wheel column. Its not only
vibration, but also a noise as if something is loose. Is this
potentially normal or maybe a sign of a serious problem. I'll take it
back to the dealer in couple of days, but I would like to get some idea
of whatis going on before I do.
Thanks!

I've checked this further and the noise is clearly coming from the top
of the steerign wheel. Most likely from the compartment with airbag as
if something is left loose in there. Would you recommend just returning
the car amd demanding a new one as this one is brand new or actually
ask dealer to fix this?

Should be an easy fix.

Relax - you would have zero chance of returning a car due to a rattle.
If you want to be taken seriously by your service department, work with
them and give them a chance to fix things.

I have a 2002 SE and had exactly the same issue. The air bag capsule in
the steering wheel is suspended using springs and when I hit a decent
sized bump, I always had a sound. I did notice that I could reproduce
the sound by hitting the edge of the steering wheel. When speaking to
the tech at my dealer who works on my Nissans, he advised me that all
they could do is replace the steering wheel and airbag assembly and hope
for the best. He could not do anything to attempt to silence the airbag
capsule or surroundings because it would be considered interfering with
a safety system. I wouldn't want any homebrew remedies there either.

I lived with it for awhile and discovered that if my tires were
overinflated by even a couple of pounds, I got the sound. When they were
at factory specified pressure, the sound went away. I left well enough
alone and have been driving with the same wheel and airbag assembly
without the rattle.

Check your tire pressure and if the problem persists, give the service
dept. a chance to fix it.

Thanks for the replies! Do you by any chance know if loose airbag
assembly is a common problem with Nissans? I'll chekc the tire pressure
to make sure it iswhat it should be.

Its not loose per se. Its my understanding that the capsule is designed
spring mounted - probably to avoid shock. When I spoke to my tech at
Nissan back in 2002 or 2003 when this was bugging me, he said that at
that time there was a service bulletin for Frontiers but was not aware
of any other models. So, there is precedent but not it was not
particularly common.

Its frustrating having to chase these little things on a brand new car.
If it continues, talk to the service department and express your concern
- just keep it professional and give them a chance to fix it.

John,
You were right! It is an airbag. The tech at the dealer is going to
replace it. In my case the sound was there even without overinflated
tires and it was pretty annoying, especially in a new car. Thanks for
the tip!
