my car is at like 35k miles (2001) and I'm wondering what I should be doing
for service at this time (besides the regular oil and filter changes) I use
conventional "dyno" oil and have been thinking about switching to either
mobil one amsoil or some other type of synthetic (mainly for longer change
periods and better engine wear) I just put in a K&N drop in filter so I
should eb all set with that for 50,000 when I have to reoil) about choing
oil, if I move to synthetic, what kind should I get (5w-30, 0w-30, something
else?) should I be draining and refilling tranny fluid or radiator fluid at
this stage? or plugs or anythign else? just wondering, thanks!

You should take that K&N and throw it away. Then keep using using dyno
changing it every 5K or so. Synthetic does no harm, but has no real
benefit either (except in extreme cold). I know, this is akin to a
religous argument with lots of opinions. That's mine.

Jim....

I agree with everything you say with exception to the oil change interval.
3750-4000 miles is about the max I would put on dino oil.
Cheers dude

I agree. Throw the K&N away (or start a savings acount for a new MAS) and
change oil 3500-4000 using dyno oil.

I change oil and filter very 5k or so, that's kilometres, so that makes it
every 3100 miles or so.
I stick with the Nissan filters exclusively.
I seem to remember a local dealer having the paper from the Nissan oil
filter unwrapped beside a FRAM and something else and the Nissan filter
length was almost twice that of the other units. That seems to me like twice
the cleaning capacity.

so whats wrong with the K&N filter? i did research before buying it and most
things I found on it said it will SIGHTLY increase gas mileage and also not
need to be changed as often. it's a regular drop in filter (still in the
factory air box) also, there are no advantages to synthetic oil? if there
isn't I'm not gonna pay the extra for it. also, is there anythign else I
should look at around 32k or so on my car? (fluids, breaks, plugs, ext.)
thanks

Definitely do the tranny fluid. Also, check the plugs. They may or may not
need changing, but since they are so inexpensive, just do them.
Radiator fluid is probably fine. Check the color and make sure it's a good,
healthy, unnatural, irridescent green.
Also check your brake and power steering fluids. May need a slight topping
off. Don't overfill the brake fluid, or you'll have too much when you put
new brake pads on later (and check those too).
