I have an 02 Max and thinking of getting a short throw shifter.  I
wanted to know if the shift rod (the part that is attached to the shift
knob) is simply shorter than a stock setup and that is the only
difference?

That is what they tell me, I was asking about short throw and basically it
is a shorter shifter rod which makes it feel like it is shorter.
Theoretically it is because your hand does not have to travel as far to get
the same shift.

A short shifter makes the stick shift shorter AND it adjusts the pivot
point on the shifter.
