this is a frustrating problem....

92 gxe automatic

every once in a while (maybe twice in a day, don't drive the car terribly
much) i get a weird noise coming from under the hood.  sounds as tho the car
is backfiring, but not at the exhaust, sounds as though it's coming back
into the intake, or throttle body.  there is one pop, moments after stepping
on the gas (not stomping) to leave from a light or other stop.  You can feel
the car hesitate, then the pop, then car accelerates as normal.

cap, rotor, wires, and plugs are all less than two months old.  only
modification is a permanent filter on the intake. (not wishing to start a
new k&n vs. paper filter string here)

not sure if this backfiring problem is harmfull, though i know it isn't a
healthy condition......any advice is most appreciated.

Did the problem start after the maintenance you mention (cap, rotor,
etc.)?

no, the problem started before, and seemed to go away for a short time, but
is back now
