It could one of the many sensors the computer uses to control the engine. If
it was not a low battery as I posted caused my Maximas computer from allowing
the fuel pump to start then you really need to have someone check the sensors
and also the computer.

when i try to start it, it doesnt crank, the stereo, lights, dash lights,
auto locks and windows work. when i try to start it it makes a real soft
but low noise. im thinking it could be the starter, HOPING its not the
timing.

CHeck your battery connections. Are they corroded? Is the positive
terminal covered with this white powdery stuff? Dis-connect and clean
the batter terminals thoroughly. You want a clean metal to metal contact.

I would think that the "Maximas computer not allowing
the fuel pump to start" would be exclusive to 99 Maximas as they got a
more elaborate optional factory security system, chipped key etc.
On the 97 Maxima, bad timing is probably not the problem. It doesn't
narrow it down much though. It could be one of the sesnors, like the cam
positon sensor.

148K is nothing for a Maxima. It's likely either the battery or the
starter if it's not cranking. Turn the overhead light on and watch it
while you try to crank. If it gets really dim it's probably the battery.
If it doesn't it's probably time for a new starter. Of course you should
make sure your battery connections are good too.
