I was backing up and when I was shifting to reverse I heard a klunk
sound. Now, the gear shift is in neutral and I can't shift to any gear
at all. When I let go the clutch the car moves forward. I got it towed
to a tranny place and after taking it apart they found out that it was
stuck in 2 gears. After unstucking it, they said could not find
anything wrong like broken part or bent part. They just replaced
differential carrier bearing a month ago. Does this make sense?
Anybody can explain this? Thanks!

It sounds as if the transmission striker had gotten lose, maybe the roll
pins where not set properly or something of that nature.

Since they worked on tranny last time, is it fair to blame their
mechanic for this problem and they should not charge me for this
latest work? How do can I prove or convince them that its their
mechanics fault? they might say I used it for a month so therefore if
there was a problem it should have showed up sooner.

Thanks

A car this age should not have a problem with the shifting mechanism,
and for that matter, nor the differential carrier bearing.  The fact
that the shifter feels in neutral, but the transmission was in gear, is
a very good hint about the striker being the problem.  How long did it
take them to "unstuck" it?  The striker problem would be matter of
minutes (if outside the trasnmission).

Thanks for your reply. I don't know how long it took them to "unstuck"
it.  Today, they still can't find anything wrong with it so they put
it back together and while the car was still in the hoist to test it,
the tranny got stuck again. So down the tranny and they took it apart
again. They told me they are waiting for an expert from another branch
to take another look maybe they are missing something. I printed
showed them your reply about the roll pin being not set properly. They
said if that was the case, the problem should have shown up sooner and
not after one month.

If they are having this kind of problems then they are not a trustworthy
shop.  The shifter mechanism in this transmissions does not have
anything extraordinay, and if there were anything wrong with it, it
would be clearly evident.

Good luck.
