Broken speedometer cable?

Hello Group. I have a situation in a '92 Maxima that seems fairly easy to
solve but I thought I'd ask for your near expert opinions. My speedometer
has begun to run backwards. At rest the needle is pegged on the right side
of the speedometer below the 120 mph marker. When the maxima begins to
move the needle moves backward from the 120 marker. Needless to say I was
surprised when while driving smoothly through a school zone, I was actually
traveling 95 mph (according to my speedometer). Could this be a broken
speedometer cable? I wonder as the speedometer works, it simply works
backwards. And no, I am not in Australia. Hope to hear some great
input/output.

Pete,

After years of my speedometer not working, I finally decided to have it
fixed the past few weeks. It started with what you are currently
experiencing. The needle moving backwards, from the max to 85 mph then
it not completely working at all. I searched the net for solutions
also and the closest solution I saw was that it was the SPEED SENSOR.
But three weeks ago, when I left my car in the shop for repair, I told
them that the speed sensor needed replacing. But the mechanic returned
back to me that it wasn't that but the cluster itself. So needless to
say, I have a new cluster, he returned the speed sensor. This car does
not have a speedometer cable as I understand. Hopefully this has been
helpful.

If you encounter any problems with your power locks in the future,
replace the door lock timer. I also had a problem with the factory
installed alarm not shutting off. Seems like having an aftermarket
alarm can cause conflicts so I had mine removed. Anyways, that's all I
have for now.

I agree with Erwin. This car has an electronic speedometer. The
problem is in the cluster most likely.
