I have a 2000 maxima that is having a problem. The car runs and drives
great as long as you dont kick in the passing gear.  The engine revs up
but no additional speed.  Anyone experience this or have any ideas what
may be happening?

Check engine light come on? Sounds like a solenoid or TCM problem. The
'00s had some solenoid TSBs.

Yes, The check engine light came on and I read the code which turned out
to be a code for the number 1 coil going bad.  Could you tell me more
about the solenoid and tcm problems?
Thank you

Follow the links mentioned here: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/748507/2

Your symptoms - tranny is slipping (?). Causes start from low charge voltage (check), to contact problems, to mechanical: bad/low oil, worn bands inside tranny... Theres also HowTo run A/T self diag - which may show the already mentioned solenoid problem(s)etc

i have the same problem.  Car runs great, but when you punch it, the rpms go up, but the car just doesn't want to go.  Also, noticed even if i'm not trying to accelerate quickly, transmission starts slipping at and above 4k rpms.

i saw someone else post this comment earlier...did you find out what the problem was

Nope.

First and foremost its electronics problem: voltage, solenoid etc checkup, oil swap, install valve upgrade set = easy cheap things first., read through mentioned links. After all smaller possibilities exhausted, then if no other solution, swap

Edit: On top of mentioned issues, there are various snake oil additives - which enhance trannyoil characteristics: anti-bubble, friction enhancement. Some ppl tell they get their A/T's working; nothin is lost as/when/if used as last chance..
