Over the past 6-12 months I've had a stubburn vibration on my '97 Max.
After repeated highspeed balancing, 4 wheel alignment, complete brake and
suspension check by certified Nissan mechanic, problem continues.  Tires
have been rotated to rule out rims.  Both outer CV's have been replaced
recently.  The shake can be felt in both the steering wheel and seat.
Nissan had a recall on control arms for '95-'97s but say my VIN was not
included.  Only other info I can share, I hear a binding (clicking) noise
on the RF wheel when car is coming to a stop and wheel is turned to left.
Only does it under braking. I'm perplexed.  Any ideas?

Maybe the short wheel drive&ball shafts have a problem.

I had a similar problem with a brand new 93 300ZX and after dickering with
the dealer for months, replaced the new Dunlops with another brand and it
went away. Tires can cause all sorts of problems, especially if they are
worn.  Good luck.

What brand tires?  The bead wall on some brands is weaker than others and
can produce the issues noted...tire rotation will not clear it up as they
all have the same side/bead wall construction.

Regarding the tires, they are top of the line Michellin ($150 each) with
about 25,000 miles.  The rear set are Firestone, which are due to be
replaced.  When I rotated them, got the exact same vibration.  Is it
possible that one of the pistons in my brake caliper isn't releasing
completely?  Accelerating from a dead stop the steering wheel jerks right.
And even though I've recently had it 4-wheel alligned, it wants to drift
right.  Thanks for the feedback.

You said up there that nissan tech inspected... if caliper doesnt release and he cannot find that out, really anythin is possible. Raise the wheels and check yourself, compare how they rotate/feel on each side

Intermittently varying pulling to side may come from loose joint, brake, pwrsteering, constant pull from tire (pressure?), bad alignment

I had Michelin MXV4+ tires and had the same problem.  Balancing,
rotation, etc etc.  Got Yokohama dB tires at half the price and got rid
of the vibration and improved wet traction by 100%.

Tire and wheel balancing are just part of the equation, the rest is
given by the tire which could be out of round.  The only weay to know
for sure is to find a tire place that uses the balancer with force
variation measurement, such as the Hunter GSP9700.  Once you find it,
you have to pray for the technician to be qualified to use it.

Pulling to the right could be a tire, alignment or suspension (bearings,
brakes, etc) issue.
