Hello all, My 1990 Maxima SE (VG Engine) with 75K miles recently developed a loud clicking noise. It is present whenever I turn the steering wheel in either direction past approximately 1/2 turn. I suspected the CV joints, but I also noticed that if I depressed the clutch and turned without accelerating, I could pin the wheel in either direction with no noise. Could this possibly be the power steering pump? Thanks for your help! Power steering pump makes a groaning/moaning sound. Amazed you have so few miles on the car. Look for a cracked, broken, or damaged boot. I figure with so few miles yours cratered due to age. My 93 has 295,000. Ran close to 2 years with a clicking shaft and just replaced it (original) a month ago so it's not prone to immediate and catrostrophic failure.
