99 GLE groans after stopping

aspasia - 20 Sep 2006 15:33 GMT Hola, amigos!
Got a 99 GLE few months ago. 92K. Seems to run fine, but I wondered about a noise it makes briefly after I shut off the ignition. It's kind of a sigh, or a groan.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

Do you mean immediately after turning off the car completely? does it happen only if you got the car fully warmed up (long drive. vs. short run)? Is it a clicking sound - if so, thats normal, just the exhaust system metal contracting as it cools.
We need more details and a better description to really provide any useful information.

Best way I could describe it was "groaning" or "sighing". This is my first Nissan, so don't know if it's "normal". Sorry, can't think of anything to add...

Perhaps it is the power antenna retracting? do you normally have the radio on prior to turning off the car?

do you normally have the radio on prior
>to turning off the car? Always.
Thanks for your input. I have to go to the dealer to get a lug nut fixed on wheel, and will ask them.

common_ sense@netscape.com - 26 Sep 2006 01:00 GMT electric motor mount,,,?
my 2000 has one,,,it adjusts depending on speed. Sometimes I do hear a slight noise from that.

>>>electric motor mount,,,? >>> [quoted text clipped - 29 lines] >>>> >>>>Aspasia common_ sense@netscape.com - 05 Oct 2006 22:38 GMT Have you had someone stand outside with the hood open and see if they can hear where this noise is coming from when you turn off the car.
It could well be a failed motor mount,,,not a good thing to be driving around with.

Ay, chihuahua! Now I AM concerned! Will carry out experiment as you suggest, with hood open. Note, however, that noise seems to be coming from the BACK of the car.

Just a wild guess: in that case it could be a loose exhaust mount or some other defect in that area.

I have now isolated the groan-which-has-become a-clunk to the RIGHT REAR of the car.
Hope that gives you more information to pin-point problem.

I finally did get down there. It took 2 trips, because I was scheduled too tightly and had to leave before they called me. Second time was the charm; they fixed the lug nut, no charge, as having been a previous defect and a safety hazard.
In all the running around, I forgot to ask them about the groaning/clunking. Guess I'll see if my local mechanic will give a listen, before I schlep all the way down to CarMax again. I do have a wrap-around warranty, so it would be taken care of with a small co-pay; it's just the time and hassle... but I'd better not let it go.

I had a knowledgeable friend give a listen today, and he immediately homed in on the power antenna. Seems it is stuck, so can't retract and groans.
Whew! THAT is a load off my mind!!!
Thanks to you and all who chimed in on this.

:) Glad you got to the bottom of it, perhaps the long way around.

It wasn't credit I was after :) I just felt bad that you were trying to the find the problem for so long even after the root cause had been suggested.
Btw, that antenna is easy to fix :) Since the motor is good, it's just a 20 dollar replacement mast that you need to swap in.
Cheers, Nirav

Any thoughts? > > Aspasia Remove the locknut at the base of the antenna and then you should be able to pry out the old mast and plastic cable. If you notice that the cable is broken, then you may need to remove the motor assembly and open it up to remove any remaining plastic cable fragments. To remove the motor assembly, look inside the trunk behind the trunk liner near the jack - there are a couple of bolts and a harness and drain hose you have to get to to get the motor assembly out. Open that up and make sure you remove any plastic cable bits - and regrease the gears while you have it open.
Then replace the motor assembly and feed in the new mast. Note: you'll need a helper to power on/off the radio while you feed in the mast.
A quick google on "power antenna mast replacement" will give you lots of leads - most cars have identical setups.
Good luck! Nirav

This is all very challenging for a low-skills critter like moi, but I guess I could START the process and see how far I can get.
Since I have bumper-to-bumper warranty on car -- not cheap! -- if it becomes too difficult, I might take advantage, for a $50 deductible, though the service center is not close by. I will inquire

BTW - could car radio still receive w/o an outside antenna? Straight question.

[quoted text clipped - 19 lines] > Good luck! > Nirav I've done this a couple of times (replace the mast). Once you remove the nut on top (either a needle-nosed pliers or a circlip tool will work to get it off), just turn on the radio and it will puke out the mast.
