1995 Maxima Turns over, but doesn't start

I have a 1995 Nissan Maxima SE that started having problems starting
recently.  When turning the key in the ignition, it would turn over
several times before finally starting.  Then the engine light came on,
and about a week later, the car won't start at all.  I pulled the codes
from the ECU, and it came back crankshaft position sensor (Reference)
and knock sensor.  I replaced the crankshaft sensor, but that didn't
help at all.  A mechanic friend of mine was over and looked at it
briefly.  He checked the spark, which was intermittent and not regular
like it should be.  Does anyone have any ideas?  Should I replace the
knock sensor?

Thanks!

Eric

The knock sensor is a red herring.  It won't cause hard starting problems.

There are two crankshaft position sensors (REF) and (POS) Are you sure you
replaced the right sensor? What was the actual code number?

its prob. the  distributer.

There's no distributor in a '95 Maxima.

sounds to me like you replaced the wrong one.If you replaced the on near the
crank pulley that's the wrong one

the one you need is up on the timing cover

could be a bad coil pack if there is no distributor. if there is a
distributor, it could be the crank angle sensor.
NissTech - 03 Dec 2006 04:03 GMT
if it were a bad coil pack only the effected cylinder wouldn't fire

there is no crank angle sensor on a 95 max.
