E.G.R. Flow Malfunction 1995 Nissan Maxima

Hello. I recently had my EGR valve solenoid replaced and I am still
experiencing problems  with my 1995 nissan maxima. The car has 365,000 miles
on it and it has had limited problems in the past. It would hardly run
(stalling, sputtering, would not take the gas) untill I had the solenoid
valve replaced. Now It runs fine as long as I am moving down the road.
However, at a stop light or stop sign when the car is in drive, it acts like
it does not want to idle. I do believe that carbon build up is causing the
problem (that is what Nissan told me as well) but I am not familier with the
EGR system. I also had it diagnosed at advanced auto and it came back egr
flow malfunction.  I have read some of the other posts and they say to clean
out a certain metal tube on the intake. My question being, where is this
tube located and what does it look like? I am not exactley sure what to look
for.  One guy told me to disconnect the straight pipe I have before the cat
converter and blow it out down the road. Not sure what to do. Any other
suggestions would be greatley appreciated. Also is this why I am only
getting 24 miles per gallon of gas?

Thanks in advance,

Greg

The tube they suggest you clean is on the back of the intake plenum (by the
firewall), next to the iac valve.  It is about 8 inches long, about the
diameter of your thumb and runs down to the egr mount.  If you take out the
air box you might be able to see it.  It is attached by two bolts on each
end & a gasket you will want to replace at each end.  Its easier if you
first take off the IAC valve (and clean it out while you have it off).

The egr temperature sensor screws into the top of the tube and plugs into
the top of the iac valve.  If you are going to take off the tube, you should
first take out the egr temp sensor and test it.  There is a good chance it
might actually be the problem and its much easier to remove than the tube.

24 MPG is about right for that car. You should about 22-24 City and
28-29 on the highway.
