I just had a brake job(rear).  Cost was
561.00...replaced(rotos,brakes&calipers + labor)
Was this a fair price. I had 2 seperate estimates and both were in the
ballpark.
Thanks, Keith

you had to replace the rotors and calibers,?????? Why,,,???????

I had my rear brakes done, at the dealer, for 200 bucks,,,,which was
probably 50 buck more than a brake shop, but the car was in for other
items.

With calipers?  At a brake shop that's quite reasonable.  Just 2 new
calipers will run $300 for parts.

It's actually not uncommon to need to replace both rear calipers over
the lifetime of the car.  I've replaced one already, you've just gotten
both out of the way.

The car only has 75K.....the driver side caliper had stuck and was wearing
down the pads and grooving the surface slighly.
The only rotor that was getting damaged was the driver side. I was told the
other rotor was
not in tolerance if they were to turn it.  I have done almost all of my
repairs in the past, but
now I do not have a place to do so. I think sometimes the place changes all
parts due to legality issues. Parts I could have gotten for almost half the
price and labor...would have cost me around
300.  You are always at there mercy.

I think that's the one thing I like most about doing work myself - I'm
not subject to someone else spending my money on overpriced, huge margin
parts.

Unfortunately, doing it myself means I sometimes have to repeat a task
because of an oversight or inexperience.  I'm not sure I come out very
far ahead in the end.

I think replacing rear brake calipers, and even less likely, the
rotors, is very very uncommon...

If you ignore doing the rear brakes, and run the caliber housing  into
the rotors - then yes ... could be true.

My rear pads went about 38K (mostly in town), and the dealer flagged
them as being within 1/32 of the danger zone.

Guess I should thank him, over priced and all, for helping me avoid a
600 dollar job.

and to those that do thier own brake jobs - I say why not also make
your own tires ; nothing more important that stopping, and I want a
stopping expert doing my work.

I think you're wrong.  I know of about a dozen Maxima owners who have
had to do it.

But then again, your opinion is worth how much, considering you say you
don't do brakes.

Why would you thank them?  Obviously something was wrong to burn a rear
pad in 38k.  Probably a sticking parking brake cable, or <gasp!> a
sticking rear caliper?!?!  But then again that's very very uncommon...

Really, seriously, brakes are not rocket science.  Just because you're
scared and ignorant of it doesn't mean someone else can't.

You replace pads - before they completely wear out and cause the
rotors to come in contact with the brake pads holders,,which destroys
both.

Your Sir are a total moron,,,,,,,

Hopefully I will never have you behind my car during a panic stop,,,,

Sounds to me like you got hosed.

Did the provide any specks as to the measured size of the rear rotors before
they condemned them ?

minor grooving of a rotor is common, thats why they make brake lathes to cut
the surface of the rotor smooth again.

exactly,,,

Unless he ran the calibers into the rotors for a long time, rear
brakes pads, and a rotor turn, should have not cost more than 200
bucks,,,even at the dealer.
