93 Maxima - ABS Chatter

I wonder if anybody has any suggestions about a problem I'm having
with my 93 Maxima (85K miles).

When I come to a stop the brake pedal pulsates, pushing back against
my foot. This happens only during the last couple of seconds of the
stop, when I am going very slowly and subtly *reducing* pressure on
the brake pedal. As your foot comes up off the pedal and you are just
about to stop the pedal starts pulsing and pushing back at you. The
car still stops, but it's very disconcerting. The ABS light does NOT
come on.

I assume that the ABS is being triggered, and *perhaps* there's
something wrong with the sensor or its alignment. This began to happen
after I had a front brake job, but whether the two are related I don't
know.

My mechanic has taken the front brakes apart and put them back
together and sees no problems. We've also disconnected each of the
front ABS sensors in turn. Unplugging either one solves the problem,
and causes the ABS light to come on.

I also note that the brakes typically chatter a little bit during the
first stop of the day. This is intermittent and has been going on for
years. But it's only during that first stop.

Thanks VERY much to anybody who can shed any light on this.

one of the wheel speed sensors is bad,
a good technician that knows how to read a service manual and use a volt/ohm
meter can isolate the malfunctioning sensor.

Thanks very much for your help. My mechanic, who specializes in Zs and
Maximas, can't figure out which sensor it is. Keep in mind that the
ABS light does not come on, and the light on the ABS box next to the
speakers in the trunk does not flash.

You can make the problem go away by disconnecting either of the front
sensor cables. That turns the ABS light on. But disconnecting either
sensor cable works equally well, so that doesn't narrow the problem
down.

The problem only occurs in the last second or so of a stop, when you
are releasing pressure on the brake pedal.

Thanks very much again,
Steve

Hi

Did you get your brakes to stop doing this?  I have the exact sam
problem on my 93 Maxima.  The pedal pushes back on my foot at th
very end of a stop.

The ABS light on the dash is not on, and the led on the ABS box in th
trunk is not blinking either

It has done this a few times over the span of a couple years but the
usually goes away after a day or two

Thank
