This is usually an issue with the precat in the front exhaust
tube. There's a TSB for the Infiniti I30 (same powertrain) which
I assume applies also to the Maxima. The fix: check the current
ECM. If it's not the most current version, have it reprogrammed.
If it *is*, you get to replace the front tube and an oxygen
sensor. (Been there, replaced both, albeit in reverse order.)

How can you can the version of the ECM?

Beats me. I've always figured you had to hook it up to CONSULT;
garden-variety scanners couldn't actually get the current part
number. But I could be wrong.

There is a TSB about the 0420 code - it could be that you need the ECU
(free) udate.
If your ECU is already updated, then it is some other problem.

Guys
I've got a 2000 as well. It has been throwing P0430 now for months.
Finally went to the dealer and he is going to replace the front cat (one
right by the radiator) for Free (under warr for 8 years). I bought it new
there. Im going in Thursday. I'll post back after I run it for a few days.
I have a funny feeling the O2 senors are going to have be changed as well
do to what I have read here on the post. Later.

These are the precats inside the exhaust manifold. For a V6 you have a
precat on each side, then there's the main cat under the car.
My suggestion? replace both O2 sensors 1st. They tend to get weak but
not throw a code. When they do get weak, your car's emissions suffer as
they dont read the exhaust well anymore. The preact code is a symptom of
that.
Also, is it
> right side from standing in front of the car looking to the rear or the
> right side if I was sitting in the driver's seat looking out?
The "front" of the V6 is the belts area, rear is the transmission side.
Take it from there. If your V6 was mounted in a rear wheel drive
vehicle, it becomes more clear which part of the engine would be the front.

There's actually 4 sensors. Two before the cats and two after. As
someone else mentioned, get the ECM updated. If it persists and you
getting tired of throwing money at it, there's always the $30 O2 simulator.

Thanks for the info. I cleared the code to see if it comes back. I'm sure
it will so I will start saving now for the parts I will have to replace.

there was a tech bulletin about flashing the ecu for this issue, had
it done for free on my 2000.
O2 simulator is just plain wrong, and illegal as hell.....
