I have a 1996 Nissan Maxima with an automatic transmission and I got a
check engine light. I checked for trouble codes, and I got one that
said "Gear 1 ratio incorrect", which I later found out can indicate
your transmission is slipping if it is an automatic. I cleared the
code, and it keeps comming back. The transmission does not seem to be
slipping, but I am still worried. I found out there is a test called
a stall test that can be performed by holding the brakes and reving
the engine with it in gear, and I fully understand how this works
because I study hydroelectric dams and have researched francis
turbines. The problem is I don't know the correct stall speed for my
torque converter, so if anybody knows the correct stall speed for the
torque converter on this car, please tell me.
Thanks,
T. Guy

What's the code?

The code is P0731 - Gear 1 ratio incorrect, and I have read in the
shop manual that if you have an automatic transmission, that could
mean a slipping 1st gear.

It probably has a failing TPS (Throttle Position Sensor).
The code is probably something in the 700's
