2001 Max SE Starting Problems

Hey guys.. I've got one for ya. I've got a 01 Max SE, Automatic
Transmission, 103K. Never had any problems out of it. The other day my
wife was driving - she pulls up to our drive, and tries to turn the
car off before she puts it in park. I guess she's used to driving a
standard. Needless to say, the car doesn't turn off, she puts it in
park and then shuts it down, no problem. She says this has happend to
her two or three times. We go inside, come back out an hour later -
it's been raining - and I try to start the car. All the lights that
normally flash during startup appear, the radio turns on, ac, lights
etc but when i put the key all the way to start all I get is a clicky
sound. CLICK, CLICK, CLICK, CLICK...over and over real fast. So, I try
it several times and nothing happens. What the heck? It appears the
battery is good - all electronic systems work fine, and I tried
putting it in neutral to start it and cycling it through the gears
several times and putting it securely back into park, but it just
keeps doing the same clicky thing and not starting. I've checked all
the fuses I can find too - they're all good. Can someone give me an
idea of what this could be? I'm stumped -

Also, the SES light has been off and on for about a year. I took it to
get it checked out and Autozone says it's one of the O2 sensors. I
haven't seen any loss in gas mileage so I haven't changed it out yet.

Most likely a starter motor problem. The click - click noise you are
hearing is the starter motor solenoid cycling back and forth but
failing to engage the pinion drive and connect battery power to the
starter motor.

It could still be the battery.  A weak but not quite dead battery can
have enough to power up the dash lights, radio, etc, but not enough to
spin the starter, so it engages the throwout bearing, the starter
tries to turn, there's not enough juice and the throwout bearing pops
back "click",  repeat.  It has happened to me a couple of times.  Get
the battery checked (& make sure both ends of the the battery cables
are tight and clean).  If that all checks out, then its got to be the
starter.

The day after this thread started, my daughter showed up on my
doorstep complaining that the '02 Pathfinder wouldn't start and just
went "click, click click click" all the light worked, radio, etc.,
Since she had a Nissan battery only 2 1/2 years old, we jumped it &
took it right to the dealer.  45 minutes later she was on her way with
a new battery after a $22 pro-ration charge.

Ya gotta love that  Mr./Mrs.Meyer

Thank goodness for the wonderful 84 month Nissan battery pro rating.

22 bucks , imagine that.  Sears would have charged over 100 bucks for a
"Dies Harder" Battery, with a lesser warranty/pro rating ratio.

depending on the climate you live in, put a battery in it every 2 to 3
years,,dont wait, just buy a battery with a 3 year warrantee (full),
and bring it back.
