Wondering if anyone out there has experienced the following problem
and how it was resolved: My '93 Maxima (140k miles) has begun to stall
while idling. It just cuts out, but starts immediately. Right now
it's more of an annoyance than anything else. Also, on occassion, it
gets little power when you step on the gas. My mechanic, having taken
a look at it, can't find anything wrong. He mentioned that he's seen
this problem before on other Maximas and said it could be that a
computer chip has begun emmitting a high-frequency pitch that, for
whatever reason, affecting one of the plug wires or distributor cap.
It sort of makes sense to me, but then again, I'm taking his word for
it. Does this make sense to anyone? Without knowing what the problem
really is, I'd hate to invest into what he's estimating to be a
$700-$800 repair. Can anyone help with the diagnosis? Overall, the
car runs great. I love it. Thanks!

That is pure BULLSHIT! emitting a high pitched freq. that is affecting plug
wires....MY GOSH! Oh yea and my piston skirts need hemming.....do you have a
needle and thread?
Try taking a look at the mass airflow sensor...there is a cause but it aint
a chip producing a high pitch freq......
RUN don't walk, RUN away from that mechanic!

Nope, not at all. That's about the dumbest thing I've ever heard come out of
a mechanics mouth!

I have a 93 Maxima GXE with 121K miles. I have a similar problem in mine, but it doesnt stall yet. Instead, it is idling rough, with the idle rpm in drive being approx. 600 rpm. In Neutral or PArk the rpm rises to 700, and hence doesnt vibrate then. When I change from Park to Drive, the rpm first dips very low, till about 400 rpm when the vibration really shoots up threatening to stall, and then creeps back up to 600 rpm wit hstill significant rpm. The mechanics I have been to, havent been able ot diagnose the problem either, with recommendatiosn ranging from major tune-up to injection system cleaning, to injector replacement to transmission service etc. I have no idea how to solve this either....the car runs like a dream otherwise.

Your problem seems a little different from mine. The stalling on my
vehicle just started to happen without any warning. The idle never
dips low, unless, of course, it stalls. And when it stalls, it just
happens without warning. There's no bucking or vibration.

In follow up to my original message ......
I had never experienced the problems I first described until today.
My fiance mostly drives the car, and each time I took it for a test
drive, I would never encounter the problem .... until today. It first
stalled while I was at a red light. I had it in first with the clutch
in and it just died. No bucking, no nothing. Just dead. It next
stalled when I was rolling to a stop. And, on occassion, it would not
react when given gas. I would have to take my foot off the gas, then
give it juice again. And at another point, I was travelling at a
steady 30 mph on a long stretch and it would slow down, acting like it
wasn't getting any gas although I had the pedal depressed slightly.
Very weird. iI don't think it's the fuel filter, as it has
get-up-&-go when you step on it. Going through these threads, it
appears a lot of Max owners have had similar problems, but no one is
really sure of a fix. So, maybe my mechanics theory of a high-pitched
computer chip isn't so bizarre.

It sounds as if you have a SE model with a VE30DE engine, which are useful
information in diagnosing your problem. If you search groups.google.com for
the terms "VE30DE" and "Stall" you should receive two threads. Click on
"RE: 92 SE" and read NissTech's response:
>>if your max has the 3.0L VE30DE engine it is most likely a bad coil or two
This is a common problem.
when the coil's go bad the emit RF (radio frequency) interference, this rf
interference get picked up by the main engine harness and travels along the
wires to the ECM,
The ECM does this noise / interference and get's confused , hence the car
feel's like it just shuts off.<<
you should be able to read the entire thread here:

I don't own a maxima with a VE30DE engine so I can't help you from here, but
hopefully this should point you into a new direction.

Thanks for the thread, Ryan. I'll look into it. Seems to follow
along with the mechanic says.
