Tips to insert Axle Seal?

I am doing my driver's side axle seal on my 1995 maxima manual
transmission.  I bought part #38342-81X00 which is a little different
from the stock seal I am replacing in that it has a metal surround vs.
plastic.  It appears to be the same size.  However, when I go to
insert it, I find it hard to get it to enter flush.  When using a seal
driver, the first or second tap sends one side of the seal in but the
opposite side pops out.  If I overlay the seal flush and start gently
tapping around it, the same thing happens.  I have even tried a large
socket and tapping that.  I have now destroyed two seals.  The second
one finally went in but leaked--no doubt from the 40 (not exaggerated)
attempts it endured before going in.

Any tips for getting the darn thing in?

Is this a dealer supplied seal? Those metal suround seals suck. I'd try to
find one with rubber on the outer portion, normally with those I just apply
some RTV silicone as a lube/sealant and the push in by hand. You may never
get that metal one in without destroying it in the process and it might
easily leak anyway.

Yeah, this is a Nissan product.  The metal is easy to deform. is very
difficult to drive in flush--and yes, I am using a seal driving tool!
I don't know when nissan switched to the metal surround but it does
suck!

Then I'd try to find an aftermarket store the sells the rubber coated style.
Like you said those metal seals suck. I'm a pro, been doing this for 25
years and it's still a fight for me to get those kind in without trashing
them.

To follow up:  went to NAPA and got a seal there.  It looks just like
the original Nissan seal I took out (rubber surround) and was so much
easier to install flush.  Was a little more expensive, but having gone
through two of the newer style Nissan seals, the extra was well spent.
No leaks!

Thanks again Steve!

You need a seal driver...
