When it's cold out side it won't let me push the automatic shifter button.  When it's nice outside it works fine. When it's cold it takes some pushing to get it to work.  I know there is a shifter lock cylinoid there but I am not positive that is the problem

have you spilled anything (coffee with sugar, soda etc) in the vicinity of
the shifter area lately..... be honest

Chances are you have and have gummed up the shift lock mechanism, there is
no real long term fix other than replacing the shifter assembly

it is a 1998 maxima gle.
I think I did have some spillage happen there once a while ago.  So I would need to order a new shifter assembly from nissan for $381???

you may be able to buy your self some time by going to the auto parts store
and buying a can of brake cleaner.

remove the trim around the shifter and spray the brake cleaner solvent all
over, be sure you have all the doors open as the solvent odor is quite
strong.

once everything in dry ( a matter of about 5 minutes or so) take something
like WD40 or other type of light oil and spray it all around in there.

I have saved a few shifters this way but I told my customers that this may
fix it and it may not, it is an attempt to buy you some time

Tanks for you advise.  I replaced shifter lock cylinoid and it fixed the
problem, at least so far it has.
