Hi there,
I recently bought a 1993 Nissan Maxima. The mechanic approved it, I
bought it, the car cleared inspection. Now a week later it is acting
moody.
The car runs fine except when I stop at lights at times the engine
starts racing, as is evident from the RPM needle going up and down.
What could cause this problem? Is it a major problem and how can I fix
it?
Please advise.
Thank you.

First, is your Max a GXE or SE? In '93, they had different engines.
You may want to clean out the throttle body. My idle was all over the
place until I cleaned it.
Quite dirty. It took a little while for the ECU to adjust to the improved
airflow,
but now it runs perfectly. I did this about 25,000 miles ago on a '91 SE.
It's very easy. And cheap. Only need to buy a new gasket and some
cleaner.

Hi Bill,
Thanks for the advice. By throttle body do you mean the fuel system.
Sorry being a novice I am unaware of the terminolgy.
Someone adviced me to use dry gas and clean the fuel system.
Also my Maxima is a GXE. Do you think it needs premium gas. I just
bought the car in the begining of March and therefore am not sure.
Is it possible that I could replce the gasket my self?.
Thank you.
Pravin.

Greetings.
I think, that YOUR problem from shortage of a cooling fluid in system of
cooling.
It could be caused by breakage of a water pump.

I recommend you buy a repair manual: Haynes or Chilton. After market repair
manuals have their faults, but something is better than nothing. With that
said, these manuals have troubleshooting guides. From what I gather, your
engine "lopes while idling or idles erradically" which my Haynes manual says
it could be...
vacuum leak
leaking EGR valve
Air filter clogged
fuel pump not delivering sufficient fuel to fuel injection system
timing chain and/or sprockets worn (my note, your '93 GXE has a timing belt
not timing chain, and I am not sure about the sprockets)
camshaft lobes worn
I would ignore Poker's observation about the cooling. Unless your coolant
reservior is low, leaking coolant, and/or temperature guage on dash is
indicating over/undercooling, I would not worry (but that's me). My 2
cents.
