Hello all,
This is my first time posting here, and I'm hoping that someone can
help diagnose a problem I'm having with my 1997 Nissan Maxima (with
129,000 miles). When I go to start it in the mornings, it often
sputters and stalls out on the first attempt, as if it is either
starved for gas or is flooded. When started, the car runs fine, and
if it is warm, it starts fine.
When this problem first started, it was very sporadic. It might
happen only 1 or 2 times over a 6-month period, and when it did
happen, the car was VERY difficult to get running. It behaved just as
if it was flooded, and only by letting the car sit for about 20
monutes would it then start in a normal fashion. Now the problem is
fairly common, happening 3 or 4 times a week. But the difference is
that now, the car usually is fairly easy to restart after the first
"stumbling."
While running, the care behaves flawlessly, and while warm, the car
starts just fine. This is only a problem with cold starting and only
on the first attempt to start. Is this a fuel pump problem? And
advice would be greatly appreciated, as I plan on fixing this myself
if at all possible.
Thanks in advance,
Mike Berger

Hey Mike. I just purchased a 1997 Maxima GLE with almost exactly the
same miles. And it is doing the same thing yours is. When cold, the
car starts and then dies. If I hold the idle at 1000-1500rpm for
about 5 seconds, no problems. I'll let you know what I learn... need
to go see if anyone in maxima.org has an idea.....

oh, one thing I need to do is to pull the ECU codes if any. I
recommend that you do the same.

looks like we need to clean the throttle body and it should take care
of the problem.

Thanks for the lead. I was planning on replacing the fuel filter, air
filter and plugs, so I'll this to the list as well. Let me know how
well it works for you and I'll do likewise.
Cheers,

I bought my '95 Maxima in Feb 2001 with 141k km on it and have just hit
170k km. I heard about the cold start problem that some have mentioned
here but have not experienced it until today (38 months later). The car
would turn over, the odd cylinder would fire but it would never run. I let
the car sit and then tried again, this time giving it a bit of gas. It
sputtered and finally ran.
I have been running this car with premium fuel since purchasing it but
lately decided to try regular (I am not very demanding of performance). I
wonder if this could be the cause of my problem.
Cheers, Norm
