2KSE - Replacing coils: Can a novice do it?

My 2KSE with approx 42K miles threw a code in January.  I took it to
the mechanic and they said it was a P1320.  They reset the code and
sent me on my merry way.

A week ago, the MIL came on when the engine was running rough
immediately after starting it.  I assume it has thrown another P1320
and from reading Google and Maxima.org, that one or more of my
ignition coils has gone bad.

I have read that it is a simple task to replace the coils but I have
very little experience under the hood of a car.

How difficult is this for a complete novice?
Are there any special tools I'll need?
Is this procedure covered in a Chilton's manual?

TIA,
Bill

It's easy.  Follow the steps at the following URL.  Just
don't remove the plugs:

It sure looks easy from the link provided.

My '99 Maxima with 52,000 miles on it had a code indicating a bad coil.

The dealer said they could not find which coil it was and the problem was
intermittent.  They said their experience has been that all coils should
be replaced because they all seem to go about the same time.  (True or
False that's what they said.)

When I balked at the price and said that I was aware that there were some
issues with the coils failing prematurely the service writer agreed and
said he'd make a call and let me know what could be done.  He called me
back and said that Nissan would pay for the replacement of all the coils.

It doesn't hurt to try...!!!

I did this the other day with the directions listed on vbmaxima, the tools

Great! I've ordered the parts from E-bay, so I'll give it a shot when
they arrive.

Hi folks,

I am the originator of this thread.  My coils came in on Saturday and I
changed them out on Sunday without a hitch.  Well, it was some pretty
tight quarters working on the rear coils, but they are all in and the car
runs.

Now I need to reset the ECU.  I followed the instructions at vbmaxima but
it appears the ECU is different on the Y2K than on the '99 referenced on
the site.  There are two holes under a piece of tape on the ECU, but
there is no screw that I could see in either of the holes.

I also tried the '02-'03 reset sequence (using the gas pedal) in the FAQ
on maxima.org, but that didn't work either in about ten tries.

So, any other ideas other than disconnecting the battery overnight which
I have read may or may not reset the ECU.

TIA,
Bill

Disconnect the battery for an hour or so.
