I'm shopping around for a used Maxima and I'm wonder if I should avoid the
first (2000) year they came out. Are there known problems with this year
which will plague me or it doesn't matter which one I get? Certain issues
come into mind, Coil pack replacement, Transmission reprogramming for delay
etc....

I was in the sam boat myself, I went with a 2001. if I found a 2000 with
everything I wanted in it, I probably would have taken it. but I stumbled upon
a 2001 max in augest of 2003, only had 8,000 miles on it. 5 speed, leather,
sunroof. I'd fully recommend a 2001.

Judging by the TSB's, either model year seems to be relatively
similar. Automatic models have issues with electronic motor mounts
and first/second and second/third slipping that requires replacement
of the solenoid pack and reprograming of the TCM. Manual models have
a throttle response problem. There is also a problem with early
failure of engine coils on either year... you can read many of the
TSB's at:
http://maxima.theowensfamily.com/tsb/
If you pay attention to affected models, you'll find that many of the
TSB's affecting 2000 models also affect 2001.
