I recently (3 weeks ago) had the Vehicle Speed Sensor replaced because the
MIL was on and the ECU readout readout showed that it was bad. After driving
the car about 15 miles the MIL came on again and shows the same problem. If
I look at a wiring diagram it shows that the Vehicle Speed Sensor drives the
speedometer directly; from there a wire goes to the ECU. It could be broken
or have a bad contact, but working your way through the wiring harness is a
nightmare. However, if I can get to the ECU I can check the wire for
continuity with a meter.  The ECU appears to be located just below the
ashtray in the front center console. Here is my question: What is the
easiest way to get to the ECU connector without having to tear the entire
dash apart? Any tips would be appreciated.

The speedometer still functions properly. Can the head still be bad? Any fix
short of replacement? If replacement is the only option, does that mean I
have to replace the whole cluster, or is the head a separate piece?
Approximate cost? Thanks.

I have the exact same problem with my 1996 Maxima.  The speedometer will
suddenly just zero out on me for a few minutes at a time and all of the
sudden will come back on and everything will function properly.  I have
also attempted to check the continuity of the voltage flow and have become
stuck at the same problem: is the problem the whole instrument panel
cluster or can something be salvaged.  If you have found a solution,
please let me know.  I will do the same.
