I smell gas when the temp is below 30 or so. Can someone give me some idea
of where to check on my Max. Could it be the charcoal canister and if so
where is that located?

You've probably got a leaking fuel injector. When it's really cold, some of
the injectors will seep fuel from where the casing seams come together. It's
not a big problem until the seep becomes a leak and a fire hazard. My 90
does the same thing. After the engine heats up, it goes away. Just keep an
eye on it.

Do you have any rust problems? If so, check carefully around the fuel
filler neck area. That was a potential problem area for early 3rd
Generation Maximas. 89 or 90 even had a recall for leaking rusty
filler tubes, as I "recall."
Good luck.

I had the same problem with my 94 SE. I found the problem to be a leaks
where the rubber hosese were connected to the fuel rails. When it was cold
the thing practically poured gas from around the fitting. Once it was warm,
I guess, the metal tubing would expand and seal the leak. I removed the 6
inches of rubber tubing that connected to both rails and their old screw
down clamps then replace the tubing and the clamps. Quick fix in just a few
minutes and it only cost a couple of dollars. Good Luck.

Sorry for incorrect termonology but it was just the standard rubber fuel
line that you can buy by the foot at any local auto store. I believe the
rubber hose that carries gasoline is lined in some way to keep the gas from
eating away the hose. I just took it to the auto store and the guy hooked
me up with a dollar's worth of hose, which was more than enough. I cut the
lengths I needed when I got home. Hope that helps.

My 90 smelled of gas as well, turned out the filler neck was rotted where the hose
attaches to the neck down at the tank , it was replaced FREE!! with a bit of evidence
from the web, it is a safety recall and they have to do it, on top of it all, this is
a yankee car that I bought from a dealer in Vancouver.
