I have a 95 Maxima. The starter is shot. I don't have the shop manual
for it so I need any advice and torque specs for reassembly.

Thanks

The thing is making a click and then a buzz sound. I think the
solenoid isn't engaging. Battery is fine. Everything else works.  It
looks fairly difficult to get to. Pointers?

Sure sounds like it might be a weak battery.  Although, both batteries in
my 95 Max died suddenly, I recently had a battery on another vehicle that
went gradually (slow crank).  That battery checked out at 12.5 volts, but
only 66 cold cranking amps (should have been 900).

When my starter went out, it had been loping for some time (like it had a
bad coil).  Apparently when it stopped on that dead coil, it would not
crank at all.  It is under the air box, but it was winter and I had no
garage at the time, so I had a dealer replace it.

The starter is a snap to get on out the Max. Just take the intake
plumbing off. It's right underneath. DOn't worry about torque, there are
two bolts and torque isn't critical, just don't gorilla them.

Every time I've ever gotten click & buzz, its been either a bad battery or
corrosion on the wire leading from the battery to the starter.  Why do you
think the battery is good?

There are two bolts holding the starter in.  The longer one, located
toward the rear, has a torque spec of 57-73 ft-lbs and the shorter one
is 22-30 ft-lbs (Nissan FSM).  For access, it is recommended to remove
the air intake system.  The longer bolt is especially hard to loosen
given it's position.  1995-mid1996 maxima's had an 8 tooth starter
which was replaced by an improved 10 tooth starter.  If you get a
rebuild, try to get the latter.

I thought my starter was shot but I re-greased the bendix and gears and it
is working like new.  This is your option if the car currently starts
easily after it is warmed up but wont engage when cold.

Most shops will just tell you you need a new starter...so be asssertive if
you take it in to be re-greased.  1.5 book hours labour at most.

Thanks for all your help guys. I took the starter off and had it
tested - it was dead. $155 bucks got the new one.
