Hmmmm . . .

I was driving home this evening and, when the headlights turned on
automatically due to the diminishing light, the display on my stereo
turned off.  So did the display on the climate control.  Upon further
fiddling I discovered that the fog lights no longer work at all.  When
I turn the headlights off, the displays come back on.  Interestingly,
the backlight behind the odometer display is on when the headlights or
off and visa versa.

I checked the fuses in the passenger and engine compartments and
didn't find one that was blown.

Coincidence-- Last week I had my front bumper replaced as a result of
a fender bender.  I have driven at night since and the problem
definately wasn't present then.  If this problem were related to the
body work I would think that it would be something along the lines of
a short, which should blow a fuse.  I wouldn't think that an open
would cause the symptoms I see.

I have a strong electronics background, but without a wiring diagram
I'm in the dark, so to speak.  :-)

So do I take it to the shop or use this an an excuse to pop for the
official manual @ approx $200?

If its related to the bumper guy, check that the relay/fuse boxes under the
hood have not been damaged and or any of them blown.  The fog lights
probably were not properly reconnected by the bumper guy.

The dash light dimmer would be the first thing to check inside the car.
Check also and make sure your taillights still work.  A lot of Nissans run
the dash dimmer circuit through the taillight fuse.

You can download the pertinent parts of the factory service manual from
Nissan for a $20 per day access fee.  Go to http://www.nissan-techinfo.com
With luck you can probably get the whole manual downloaded in one day.

The dimmer indeed ! ! !  You hit the nail on the head.  It all becomes
clear to me now.  I had not driven at night since detailing my car a
couple days ago.  Apparently I indavertantly wiped the dimmer in the
off position.  I'm feeling kind dim myself right now. :-)

Interesting news about the factory service manaual.  I have a cable
modem so I just might go for a marathon download session.  I presume
that the downloads are in PDF format.  Thanks for the great
suggestions!
