Have any of you D-I-Y's replaced the timing chain tensioner in their
96 and later Max? Mine allows chain rattle at every cold start even
with 5W-30 Mobil 1 oil and Nissan filter. Are parts expensive and is
it difficult or time consuming?
I'd also appreciate hearing from anyone whose paid to get this part
replaced exclusive of water pump replacement. Thanks.

I think the parts are cheap. If you are going through the trouble,
you may want to change the water pump (or it's two O-ring seals)
because removal of the tensioner will allow timing chain slack that
makes the water pump change a piece of cake. I remember seeing a
Chilton-online howto that was very instructive. You just do NOT want
to risk dropping anything into the timing chaing cover area.
Otherwise, it'll take you around an hour.

get rid of Mobil 1 and use a good oil. "Ams/Oil" Mobil 1 has
too much wax in it.
